eBay Image Size: Minimum, Recommended and What Gets You Demoted

eBay is forgiving on format and strict on one invisible thing. Check the pixels and size first, then read about the ranking penalty.

How to use it

  1. Drop your listing photos.
  2. The checker tests 1600×1600 and the 12 MB per-photo ceiling.
  3. Fix the flagged number before you list.

The numbers eBay enforces

At least one photo is required. The longest side must be 500 px minimum, and eBay recommends about 1600×1600 — that is the size where the hover zoom gives a buyer enough detail to inspect stitching, ports and wear. Each photo can be up to 12 MB, and you can attach up to 24 photos per listing.

Accepted formats are broader than most marketplaces: JPEG, PNG, GIF, TIFF, BMP, WebP, HEIC and AVIF. eBay stores photos for 90 days, which matters when you relist.

The rule that costs traffic without ever rejecting you

eBay prohibits added borders, text, artwork, badges, logos and watermarks on listing photos — and unlike Amazon, breaking this does not bounce the upload. It quietly affects where the listing appears in search. A small copyright line in the corner feels harmless and is treated as clutter.

The same policy bans copying images from a manufacturer website, even if you are an authorised dealer. Your own photos of the actual item, or images from the eBay product catalogue, are the clean options.

Why HEIC uploads fail on eBay even though HEIC is supported

HEIC is on the accepted format list, but uploads fail in Firefox, in some Safari versions and in the legacy listing tool. If you shoot on an iPhone and list on a desktop browser, the safe move is to convert to JPG first.

This is also where a 12 MB ceiling is effectively lower than it looks: a phone HEIC is usually 2–4 MB, but a batch export can produce TIF or BMP files that blow past 12 MB without warning.

Frequently asked questions

Is 500 px really enough for eBay?

It is the enforced minimum, and listings below it get a low-quality flag that hurts placement. It is not enough to look good: aim for 1600 px on the longest side, which is what eBay recommends and what makes hover zoom usable.

Does eBay require a white background like Amazon?

No. eBay prefers white or light neutral backgrounds but does not enforce pure white, and actually suggests darker backgrounds for shiny or reflective items such as jewellery.

How many photos can I add?

Up to 24 per listing, with at least one required. For used goods eBay specifically recommends close-ups of flaws, because set expectations reduce returns.

What file size is too big?

Over 12 MB per photo. A 1600×1600 JPEG almost never reaches that, so if an upload fails on size, the file is probably a TIFF, BMP or a full-resolution phone original.

Should I upload HEIC directly?

Better to convert. HEIC is listed as supported, but it fails in several browsers and in the older listing tool, and the failure is silent — the photo simply does not appear.
